SST raises the bar with new Tool Detection Alarm

Severn Subsea Technologies (SST) has developed an advanced Tool Detection Alarm (TDA) system that brings multiple commercial, safety and environmental benefits.

TDAs are a niche product used to reduce the risk of accidental contact between borehole tools and wellhead equipment during well intervention activities. Should contact occur, it can result in major damage to equipment and the potential loss of the tool string down the well. This can lead to unplanned downtime and lost production.

SST has taken measures to ensure its TDA outperforms other solutions on the market. The system has a low power design to maximise battery life and, unlike other models, its battery does not use lithium cells. This means it is not subject to Class 9 shipping restrictions and it can be transported by helicopter to offshore assets. Importantly, the entire TDA system – including the control box and battery – is fully ATEX and IECEx certified for use in Zone 0 gas environments.
